Legal, social, and biological definitions of pedophilia

Abstract: Although there is substantial evidence in the historical and anthropological record of the sexual use of children by adults, surprisingly little is known about the etiology of pedophilia or its relation to other forms of sexual aggression. After briefly reviewing the research on pedophilia, we argue that one major difficulty in conducting or interpreting such research lies in the different definitions "pedophilia" has received. Most important, much of the research has accepted a legal definition of pedophilia,… Show more

“…Basil: Regula Fructuosi, 1107 A.D. (Payer, 1982, p. 61) Substantial evidence exists, in the historical and anthropological record, that the sexual use of children has a long history (Ames & Houston, 1990). The sexual use of pubescent boys was practiced in ancient Greece and Rome, but these acts were either prohibited or permitted depending upon the different legal statutes of each state (Cohen, 1987;Sergent, 1993).…”

“…The sexual use of pubescent boys was practiced in ancient Greece and Rome, but these acts were either prohibited or permitted depending upon the different legal statutes of each state (Cohen, 1987;Sergent, 1993). However, the sexual use of children was not limited to ancient Greece and Rome; historical accounts from the 18th century show that these practices continued in China, Japan, Africa, Turkey, Arabia, Egypt, and Islamic areas of India (Ames & Houston, 1990).…”
