“…The transition of stratification towards functional differentiation had an important impact on the invention of the printing press, allowing for the birth both of a system of mass communication and of public opinion as a “mirror” before which political power would need to perform its operations and seek legitimation. As Vesting (2018) observes, from then on communication could be horizontally processed among the populace, via their claims, manifestos and declarations. Nowadays, however, these dynamics have changed due to the usage of big data management, customized marketing and “profiling” in social media (Moeller and D’Ambrosio, 2019): politicians and political entities can adapt their image to each trend in public opinion, followed in real time through traces left by individual users on the worldwide web.…”
