Leiomyoma in the Retzius space

Abstract: Parauterine location of leiomyomas is observed to be an extremely rare clinical condition. However, when benign or malignant primary tumours are detected in that area, they are often found in the Retzius space. There have been only six cases of leiomyomas in the Retzius space reported in the literature so far. The paper presents one such leiomyoma case located in the Retzius space. This extremely rare location of the tumour justifies its presentation. The medical records of the patient treated in the outpatien… Show more

“…The differential diagnoses for a mass in the space of Retzius include true tumours or similar lesions like an abscess or haematoma, granuloma, haemangiopericytoma, lymphangioma, neurinoma, subpubic cartilaginous cyst and very occasionally leiomyoma and leiomyosarcoma 5 6. The case was misdiagnosed preoperatively due to the extremely unusual location of the lesion and atypical presentation.…”

“…However, there is paucity of reports in the literature about diseases developing in the Retzius space. The majority of cases reported are leiomyomas and so far, there have been only 7 cases, all of them in female patients . The rest of the cases involving tumors include a cystic lymphangioma, an angiomyxoma and a spindle cell lipoma .…”

“…Leiomyomas are the most common tumors found in this location, yet only 7 cases have been reported in the literature so far, all of them described in female patients. [1][2][3][4][5][6] We report a unique case of a leiomyoma of the Retzius space in a male patient and discuss an imaging-based diagnostic approach to diseases affecting the space of Retzius. angiomyxoma and a spindle cell lipoma.…”

“…Notably, a challenge that surgeons face with IPP surgery is implant reservoir placement. Surgeon preference dictates reservoir placement, with the most common being in the space of Retzius (SoR); the extraperitoneal space between the pubic symphysis and the urinary bladder 79 . However, in the case of prior violation of the SoR, reservoir placement in that location increases the risk of bladder injury.…”
