Leiomyoma of the Bladder Causing Urethral and Unilateral Ureteral Obstruction: A Case Report

“…These lesions arise from the circular fibers of the smooth muscle of the urethra. When large, they are not easily differentiated from vaginal leiomyomas (1). The lesions are benign and malignant transformation has not been reported, though there is one report of a case of local recurrence (17).…”

“…It is the common view that a tumor in the bladder is clearly visualized on Tlweighted images because of the contrast between the moderate-intensity tumor and the low-intensity urine, while the invasion of the tumor into the deep muscle is well demonstrated by T2-weighted images. However, leiomyoma of the bladder is rare; MR imaging of the leiomyoma of the bladder was reported in only one of the 167 cases which have been reported [1,[4][5][6], In our case, the tumor surface was smooth in the Tlweighted images and it did not invade the entire bladder wall in the T2-weighted images. In the latter sequence, it was also seen that the inside of the tumor was dotted with patchy high intensity.…”

“…Non‐epithelial tumors of the bladder, especially leiomyomas, are relatively rare, comprising about 0.3% of all bladder tumors 5 . In both sexes, about 200 cases of leiomyoma of the urinary bladder have been reported 6 and the incidence is approximately three times higher in females than in males 7 . In Japan, 129 cases have been reported.…”
