Leiomyomas requiring chest wall resection and reconstruction

Abstract: Leiomyomas of the chest wall are very rare in the literature; only nine cases have been reported. We present two cases: First case was a 32-year-old female. Two separate pleural tumors were detected and resection was performed. Local recurrence occurred after 1 year follow-up and required chest wall resection and reconstruction. The second case is a 43-year-old male. A tumor was found in 7th rib's cartilage at radiological examination, and chest wall resection and reconstruction was performed. Both cases were … Show more

“…Leiomyomas represent only 4.4% of benign tumours in soft-tissues and excluding those arising in cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue, leiomyomas in chest wall are very unusual 1–6. All the cases of chest wall leiomyomas in literature report intrathoracic (intrapleural or extrapleural) localisation 1–6. In our case, we report an unusual calcified atypical deep soft-tissue leiomyoma localisated in extrathoracic chest wall.…”

“…In the literature, only two cases reported tumor growth into the thoracic wall. Kanlioglu et al mentioned a chest wall leiomyoma case who had a mass which destroyed the seventh rib [3]. Nakada et al presented a case report in which a leiomyoma originated from the chest wall and grew into the chest wall [4].…”

“…Chest wall resection is usually not required, but was added to surgery in four patients (36.4%). Kanlioglu et al presented two cases, both of them requiring chest wall resection and reconstruction [3]. Additionally, in the case reports of both Nakada et al and Proca et al, the authors completely resected the tumor with chest wall resection [4,8].…”
