Leiomyosarcoma of the main bronchus in a girl: A long‐time survivor with multiple lung metastases

Abstract: Primary leiomyosarcoma of the respiratory tract is a very rare malignancy, especially in childhood, with only 15 cases in patients under 16 years old having been reported. In the present case, the survival period from the onset of symptoms has been over 7 years, despite incomplete resection. Based on the 15 published cases, the prognosis is poorer when the tumor is unresected or incompletely resected, but under favorable circumstances, prolonged survival is possible.

“…Leiomyosarcoma tends to occur in older patients; however, it has been reported in children and young patients, as in the present case (VeraRoman et al 1983;Jimenez et al 1986;Takeda et al 2004). Pulmonary leiomyosarcomas are subdivided into parenchymal, arterial, and venous types (Ohta et al 1992;Moran et al 1997;Fitoz et al 2000).…”

“…In our case chest X-ray and CT scan showed a solitary pulmonary nodule of the left lingular lobe but bronchoscopy was non contributory. Analysing 15 reported patients under 16 years of age, Takeda et al [2] found that the prognosis was poorer when the tumour was unresected or incompletely resected, but under favorable circumstances, prolonged survival was possible. Our case "a small incidentally detected SPN in the left lingular lobe" had complete resection in the form of left lingular lobectomy.…”
