Leishmania spp. Detection Using a Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor

Abstract: Abstract:The detection of Leishmania spp. through a disposable surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biochip, using mono-and polychromatic sources, is presented here. A highly specific and sensitiveconstrained synthetic peptide (LC2) derived from a mimotope of Leishmania chagasi antigen was immobilized on the sensing region using a simple protocol. ELISA-and PCR-confirmed negative and positive sera of Leishmania chagasi infected patients were used. Detection of positive IgG showed a fast response with good sensitivi… Show more

“…A DNA-based biosensor using SPR that targeted the kDNA detected L. major and L. tropica [ 245 ]. Also using SPR biosensing techniques, Ferreira et al [ 245 ] developed an immunosensor based on circulating antibodies against L. infantum , which achieved antibody detection within 7 min [ 246 ]. Another DNA detection biosensor, which uses fluorescent probes based on the kDNA of L. infantum and nanostructured films as sensing platforms, provided sensitive results (1.1 nM of target DNA) even for complex sample types such a human blood [ 247 ].…”

“…The most common forms are visceral leishmaniasis, also known as kala-azar, and cutaneous leishmaniasis. Visceral leishmaniasis is the most severe variation of leishmaniasis and is caused by the species Leishmania donovani and Leishmania infantum (54)(55)(56)(57)(58).…”

“…A SPR‐based biosensor on mono/polychromatic sources was proposed for highly specific and sensitive detection of Leishmania chagasi antigens. The rapid operation time with high sensitivity and good specificity was reported for this biosensor 13 . In another report, a gold nanoparticle‐based biosensing strategy was developed for sensitive detection of Leishmania DNA genome with both visual and spectrophotometric techniques.…”
