Lemierre syndrome with pulmonary empyema caused byPrevotella intermedia

Abstract: Lemierre syndrome is a rare disease that is most often caused byFusobacterium necrophorum. We present a case caused byPrevotella intermediain a young, healthy man, complicated by multiple cavitary lung lesions, loculated pleural effusions requiring chest tube placement and trapezius abscess. Our case highlights (a)P. intermediaas a rare cause of Lemierre syndrome and (b) clinical response to appropriate antimicrobial therapy may be protracted.
