“…Similar results emerged also from literature on other non‐human primates, such as M. leonina [Zhao et al, ] and P. anubis [Vauclair et al, ]. However, given that most of the ring‐tailed lemurs considered in this study were adult (>3 years, age of sexual maturity [Garbutt, ; Wilson & Hanlon, ]), this result should be interpreted carefully. Further studies including colonies with a greater variation in age composition need to be done.…”

“…It has been reported that right handedness is more common among terrestrial compared to habitually arboreal non‐human primate species, due to the liberation of the hands from the duties of postural support constraints characterizing the life on trees [Hopkins et al, ; MacNeilage et al, ; Meguerditchian et al, ]. Among strepsirrhines, the ring‐tailed lemur has been considered one of the most terrestrial species, spending approximately one third of the average day on the ground [Jolly, ; Sussman, ; Wilson & Hanlon, ]. The terrestrial habits of this species might therefore explain the tendency toward the right hand use reported in the current study.…”

“…We conducted the co‐feeding experiments with two species of lemurs, ringtailed ( Lemur catta ) and redfronted lemurs ( Eulemur rufifrons ). Both species live in multi‐male, multi‐female groups and have similar body size, brain size, and diets (Isler et al., ; Johnson, ; Wilson & Hanlon, ). However, they differ in their social structure (Pereira & Kappeler, ), which makes them well suited for this study.…”

“…The ring-tailed lemur scientific designation was initially quite lively and included names like Catta mococo , Maki mococo, Prosimia catta and even Odorlemur catta , [Wilson and Hanlon, 2010], the latter no doubt reflecting their dramatic 'stink fights'. Of course, their official designation is Linnaeus' Lemur catta [Thomas, 1911].…”
