Lentinus edodes Exposure before and after Fetus Implantation: Materno-Fetal Development in Rats with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Background: The presence of β-glucans and phenolic compounds in Lentinus edodes suggests this mushroom can be used as a nutritional supplement. Two gestational conditions (before and after fetus implantation) were evaluated, and Lentinus edodes exposure was performed in diabetes mellitus rat model induced by streptozotocin in pre-clinical tests. Methods: On the 20th day of pregnancy, cesarean sections were performed. Blood was collected for biochemical, hematologic parameters and oxidative stress biomarkers. P… Show more

“…On the other hand, the adverse uterine environment of maternal diabetes could cause an increase in placenta weight and elevated glucose levels in both plasma and amniotic fluid ( Laurino et al, 2019 ). In the diabetes, higher placental weights showed reduced placental efficiency and inability to transfer nutrients to the developing fetus ( Volpato et al, 2015 ).…”

“…It was possible to identify that some of these natural products are closely related to the attenuation of inflammatory processes and oxidative stress, such as Picralima nitida , Nauclea latifolia, and Oxytenanthera abyssinica [ 184 ], besides the nano-resveratro-zinc oxide complex, encapsulated with chitosan [ 185 ], raw propolis of stingless bee ( Heterotrigona itama ) [ 186 ], and thymoquinone [ 187 ], while others were related only to antiglycidic and antiinsulinemic activity, such as Hibiscus rosa-sinensis [ 188 ], Orthosiphon stamineus [ 189 ], Lentinus edodes [ 190 ], and Mentha piperita [ 191 ].…”

“…Conforme demonstra a Tabela 1, no grupo (Ab 1-8 ) observou-se um aumento de fetos nascidos vivos. No trabalho de Laurino et al 24 , as ratas Wistar prenhas, expostas ao pó liofilizado do cogumelo Lentinus edodes (100 mg/kg/dia), antes e após a implantação fetal não foram observadas alterações no número de fetos vivos por mãe entre os grupos estudados e o controle negativo, divergindo ao resultado encontrado nesta pesquisa.…”
