Lepidopteran pests associated with the soybean cultivars phenology

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Lepidopteran pests are one of the major constraints to the soybean production potential, whose defoliating caterpillars can occur throughout the crop cycle causing serious damage. Therefore, the objective was to study the population fluctuation of lepidopteran pests and the association of species with the growth stages of soybean cultivars in the Cerrado of Piaui State, Brazil, in order to obtain data to support integrated pest management in the crop. The experiments had as a source of variation thirt… Show more

“…The expansion of soybean production increased the crop's vulnerability to insect pests 1 such as the defoliating insect Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Hübner), known as the velvet bean caterpillar 2 The most common management technique used in modern agriculture to control these pests involves the spraying of inorganic insecticides, harming the environment and human health 3 . To reduce the use of inorganic chemicals in agriculture, highly specific natural molecules with good insecticidal activities have been sought 4–7 …”

“…Until the 90s decade, C. includens was considered a secondary pest and was controlled mainly by entomopathogenic fungi and parasitoids (Bortolotto et al, 2015;Bueno et al, 2017). However, the overuse of non-selective insecticides, often associated with herbicides and fungicides, has increased the presence of C. includens in soybean, changing the status of the soybean looper to a primary pest widely distributed in the main soybean crops in Brazil (Borém and Almeida, 2011;Bortolotto et al, 2015; C. includens attacks during the vegetative and reproductive phase (Carneiro et al, 2018). At small instars (from first to third), larvae tend to feed on parenchymatous tissues or highly digestible leaves because of their low fiber content whereas more developed larvae feed on older and more fibrous leaves including the veins (Kogan and Cope, 1974).…”
