Leptoproduction of $\rho $ Mesons as Discriminator for the Unintegrated Gluon Distribution in the Proton

Abstract: The gluon content of the proton, in the high-energy regime, is embodied by the unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD), which describes the gluon emission probability, with a given longitudinal momentum fraction and transverse momentum. The UGD, formulated within the κ-factorization approach, has universal validity and several models for it have been proposed so far. We will show that the polarized ρ-meson leptoproduction at HERA is a not trivial testfield for discriminating among existing models of UGD.

“…Moreover, the convolution of one impact factor with the unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD) in the proton gives access to single-forward processes, such as the exclusive light vector-meson electroproduction [76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83], the exclusive quarkonium photoproduction [84][85][86] and the inclusive tag of Drell-Yan pairs in forward directions [87][88][89][90]. Starting from high-energy ingredients encoded in the UGD, first determinations of small-x enhanced collinear PDFs [91][92][93] as well as T -even gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distributions (TMDs) [94,95] were recently proposed.…”

“…On the other hand, in Refs. [150][151][152][153] it was highlighted how comparisons with HERA data on helicity-dependent observables for the forward polarized ρ-meson electroproduction permit to constrain the κ-shape of the UGD (pioneering studies on the diffractive production of ρ mesons in the high-energy factorization can be found in Refs. [154][155][156][157]).…”

“…More in particular, the emission of a single forward particle in lepton-proton or proton-proton scatterings offers us the chance to define an unintegrated gluon distribution (UGD) in the proton, written as a suitable convolution of the BFKL gluon Green's function and of a non-perturbative proton impact factor. Formerly used for the investigation of DIS structure functions [80], the UGD has later been studied via the exclusive diffractive electroproduction of a single light vector meson [81][82][83][84][85][86] at HERA and via the forward inclusive Drell-Yan production [87][88][89] at LHCb. Then, determinations of collinear parton distribution functions (PDFs) at NLO and next-to-NLO (NNLO) fixed-order calculations, improved via the inclusion of NLA small-x effects, were proposed in the last years [90][91][92].…”
