Leptosphaeria maculans Alters Glucosinolate Accumulation and Expression of Aliphatic and Indolic Glucosinolate Biosynthesis Genes in Blackleg Disease-Resistant and -Susceptible Cabbage Lines at the Seedling Stage

Abstract: resistance in two interactions-BN4098 × 03-02s and BN4303 × 00-100s and enhanced GBS content only in BN4098 × 03-02s interaction. Aliphatic GRA took part in resistance of BN4098 × 00-100s interaction whereas aliphatic GIB took part is resistance of BN4098 × 03-02s interaction. Aliphatic GIV accumulated upon BN4098 × 03-02s interaction but GSL-OH-Bol033373 and CYP81F2-Bol026044 showed enhanced expression in BN4303 × 03-02s interaction. The association between the selected candidate genes, corresponding glucosin… Show more

“…Thus, specific compounds play distinct roles in the preference or performance of specialist pathogens and insect pests. 55,61 For instance, specific GLS compounds can act as gustatory stimulants for P. xylostella larvae. 55 When larvae were exposed to cabbage lines differing in GLS profile, a higher level of herbivory was observed on plant lines rich in aliphatic GLSs glucoerucin, glucoraphanin, progoitrin and gluconapin, and indole 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin; on the other hand, lower leaf damage was recorded on plants with high content of aliphatic sinigrin, glucoiberin and glucoiberverin, and indole glucobrassicin.…”

“…Specialist pests use GLSs as cues for host plant acceptance, but the choice is usually mediated by the GLS profile and not by the total amount. Thus, specific compounds play distinct roles in the preference or performance of specialist pathogens and insect pests 55,61 . For instance, specific GLS compounds can act as gustatory stimulants for P. xylostella larvae 55 .…”

“…GSLs hold a significant position as secondary metabolites in cruciferous vegetables and exhibit a close association with both biotic and abiotic stress factors. Several studies have shown that the content of GSLs is positively related to resistance against diseases and insects [ 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 ]. When a plant cell is ruptured due to pest or pathogen attack or mechanical wounding, the GSLs and myrosinase (hydrolytic enzymes, M) interact and undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water to liberate diverse substances, such as isothiocyanates (ITCs) [ 85 ], which possess a broad spectrum of biocidal properties [ 86 , 87 ].…”

“…GSLs are significant secondary metabolites in cruciferous vegetables and are closely associated with biotic and abiotic stresses. Numerous studies have indicated that GSL content is positively correlated with resistance to diseases and insects [ [77] , [78] , [79] , [80] , [81] , [82] ]. When a plant cell is ruptured because of pest or pathogen attack, or mechanical wounding, GSLs and myrosinase (hydrolytic enzymes, M) come into contact and are hydrolysed in the presence of water to release various products, including isothiocyanates (ITCs) [ 83 ], which have a wide range of biocidal characteristics [ 84 , 85 ].…”
