Leptospirosis in Red Foxes in Ontario

Abstract: The role of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in the epizootiology of leptospirosis in southwestern Ontario was investigated in 1973-1974. Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona (kennewicki by DNA analysis) was isolated from the kidneys of three of eight foxes tested. Severe hemorrhagic nephritis and interstitial nephritis were common to these foxes and to five others out of nine foxes examined. Autumnalis antibodies were detected at titers 10(-2) to 10(-5) in 12 of 100 fox sera. Pomona antibodies occurred in 6% of t… Show more

“…Autumnalis is usually associated with small mammals and pomona with wildlife populations (Kingscote 1986;Boqvist et al 2002;Matthias and Levett 2002). The autumnalis, canicola, and pomona serovars were also identified in native carnivores of the northern Pantanal (Jorge 2008), but the icterohaemorrhagiae and autumnalis serovars were most common from horses in the same region (Jorge 2008).…”

“…These results suggest that the serovars detected in our study have been circulating in the northern region of the Pantanal. However, the possibility of cross-reactivity among serovars in the MAT should not be discarded (Kingscote 1986).…”

“…Wild animals are widely accepted to be important reservoirs of Leptospira (Levett, 1999; Ward et al., 2002). Serosurveys of numerous North American wild mammals suggest a history of exposure to the organism with subsequent seroconversion; based on prevalence of infection, small and intermediate sized mammals including skunks (Ferguson and Heidt, 1981), raccoons (Alexander et al., 1972; Bigler et al., 1975), rats (Thiermann, 1981), opossums and foxes (Kingscote, 1986) are often implicated as important maintenance hosts.…”
