“…Geographically isolated populations could have diverged into a more arid-adapted form, V. rueppellii, which would then be able to expand its range through all the Sahara, the Arabian Peninsula and reached Pakistan. Fossil records register the presence of V. vulpes in Eurasian faunas by the Late Pleistocene/Holocene (Sommer and Benecke 2005), while paleontological data in North Africa is scarce, with a single fossil of a V. rueppellii-like canid dating from 0.8 Mya, and of V. vulpes dating from 0.6 Mya (Aouraghe 2000;Geraads 2011).
