This paper proposes a study of the polysemy of four colour verbs (rougir, bleuir, verdir and jaunir) based on Dubois & Dubois-Charlier’s (1997) electronic dictionary Les Verbes Français. They consider rougir and verdir as verbs of feeling; as opposed to bleuir and jaunir. After a presentation of some theoretical considerations with regards to the properties of verbs of feeling as opposed to light verbs, we will show that in a construction such as V<couleur> de Nsent, these colour verbs are not predicative as such but rather they are light verbs that take a predicative noun and give the construction an intensive meaning. A corpus analysis highlights the syntactic and semantic properties of these verbs and the adjectives they are morphologically similar to (rouge, bleu, vert and jaune).
