Les Sandales D’Hermès, II. Les Σάνδαλα Végétales et le Voyage D’Hermès ( HhHermès 79–139)

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to show that Hermes’ journey from Pieria to the Alpheus river was composed as a journey towards the beyond or, at least, that it borrows motifs from literary accounts of heroic and divine catabaseis . This reading of the text is the starting point for a new interpretation of the function and meanings of the σάνδαλα invented by Hermes, and the evidence they contribute with regard to the symbolism of footwear, especially compared to the πέδιλα of Homer’s Hermes.
