Less work: more burnout? A comparison of working conditions and the risk of burnout by German physicians before and after the implementation of the EU Working Time Directive

Abstract: Changes in working conditions in accordance with the European Working Time Directive are not accompanied by reduced strain and risk of burnout for physicians. Rather, our data argue for greater intensification in work, especially for senior physicians. Further studies are suggested in order to explore interventions for a sustainable improvement in the working conditions of physicians.

“…Another surprising finding was that the sleep of German doctors had reduced since the implementation of the European Working Time Directive, which resulted in the restriction of work hours to a maximum of 48 h (on average) per week [22]. It is possible that this resulted in more time on-call from home, and increased transit time between the hospital and home.…”

“…National regulations thus limit the environments in which these types of midwives are allowed to operate and hence their job discretion, task responsibility and exposure to more challenging work demands (Vedam, Stoll, Schummers, Rogers, & Paine, 2014). However, although research has sought to evaluate the effects of these institutions (particularly health and safety institutions working time legislation) on outcomes such as productivity, health and safety (e.g., ILO, 1990;Richter, Kostova, Baur & Wegner, 2014), there is a lack of systematic evidence for their effects on work design, such as from cross-national comparative studies.…”

“…Ressalta-se a importância de intervenções amplas em relação ao contexto do trabalho, corroborando estudos que apontam que intervenções limitadas, como apenas alteração na jornada de trabalho, as quais não repercutem reduções tão expressivas no risco de burnout (Richter, Kostova, Baur, & Wegner, 2014).…”
