Lesson Learned from Semester of Online Teaching of Automation Using Simulators

Abstract: The year 2020 has taught us a very important lesson about communication between university lecturers and students in laboratories. This paper is showing conclusions after a semester of remote personal contact with students and laboratory equipment. In normal cases authors of this paper providing their lessons in a laboratory equipped with industry effectors, Robots, Pneumatic equipment, and PLC’s. It was replaced with simulators, because of the lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. In the paper, we describ… Show more

“…In [35], both online teaching and evaluation were compared against their in‐person counterparts, with additional information on the effect of the economic status of the students. Concerning teaching methodology, in [24], the use of simulators instead of laboratory equipment was analyzed, in the frame of an engineering automation course. Finally, an interesting study carried out at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (Spain) and presented in [11] concluded that online teaching during the COVID‐19 lockdowns promoted better studying habits, particularly continuous studying.…”

“…Many components such as sensors, actuators, electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic drives are used in industrial applications. Integrating these components into working industrial applications requires a lot of time, money and research into the operation of systems from different manufacturers [1]. In recent years, virtual systems have been developed to facilitate the planning of industrial applications.…”
