Lessons Learned from Descaling Wells in a Sandstone Reservoir in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: This paper describes the development and field application of an acid-based treatment to remove downhole scale in several oil producing wells in a sandstone reservoir in Central Saudi Arabia. The sandstone reservoir is weakly consolidated and sanding problems were noted in several wells. To avoid sanding problems, these wells were gravel packed. In addition, the reservoir pressure and gas oil ratio are low and, as a result, electrical submersible pumps (ESP) are used to produce these wells. The sandstone reser… Show more

“…Well H-6 was descaled using the procedure described by Nasr-El-Din et al 25 The well was allowed to flow for nearly 12 days, then was treated with the scale inhibitor squeeze treatment. Details of the latter treatment will be discussed in this paper.…”

“…The scale in the three fields causes loss of well performance, and is usually removed by an acid treatment. The procedure and field cases of descaling producing wells in the sandstone reservoir were given by Nasr-El-Din et al 8 Calcium carbonate scale problems in the three fields are addressed by descaling followed by squeezing the wells with a phosphonate-based inhibitor. These two steps are usually…”
