Lessons Learned from the Water Producer Project in the Atlantic Forest, Brazil

Abstract: Forest and landscape restoration (FLR) is a powerful strategy for large-scale tropical forest recovery, and payment for ecosystem services (PES) is used to support FLR programs and projects on privately-owned land. In this article, we discuss the lessons learned from the Water Producer Project, a pioneer, multiple-stakeholder, and PES-supported FLR project in the Atlantic Forest, south-eastern Brazil. The project was implemented in four landscapes located in two municipalities. Altogether, 41 PES contracts wit… Show more

“…Case studies focused only on ecological restoration with no regards to the social and institutional landscapes were not considered. Four of the case studies presented at the conference are published in this special issue [28][29][30][31]. The author of the case study in China was originally supposed to have presented a project that took place in a tropical area, but changed the focus of the presentation.…”

“…Moreover, FLR often depends on improving the long-term sustainability of production systems that may have negative short-term impacts on local livelihoods [14], especially where land tenure is insecure [15]. Without the active involvement of local people and other stakeholders, restoration may fail to fulfill the expected goals or lead to unintended negative consequences [8,[16][17][18].…”

“…• transaction costs for setting up and piloting schemes (Viani, Bracale and Taffarello, 2019); • the additionality and permanence of interventions (Ezzine-De-Blas et al, 2016); • leakage effects and fairness (Lopa et al, 2012); and • monitoring and determining the effectiveness of forest management practices in improving water indicators. Before embarking on a payment scheme, therefore, careful consideration should be given to whether it is the most appropriate policy option.…”
