“…The intestinal transcellular pathway occurs in 3 steps: apical Ca 2+ entry, intracellular Ca 2+ transport and basal active Ca 2+ extrusion (Wasserman and Taylor, 1966; Coty and Conkey, 1982). We did not detect TRPV6 in the current study at any age, although previous studies have reported its expression in the intestine of the laying hen (Yang et al, 2011; Jonchère et al, 2012; Li et al, 2018). This observation is in agreement with the absence of a TRPV6 expression in the chicken RNAseq data and in growing broiler chickens, despite the detection of an immunoreactive TRPV6 protein in the chicken's small intestine (Proszkowiec-Weglarz and Angel, 2013; Huber et al, 2015; Juanchich et al, 2018; Proszkowiec-Weglarz et al, 2019).…”

“…Overall, LZ treatment in pullets increased cortical bone area and cBMD at 6 and 9 woa compared to untreated animals ( Li et al., 2019 ). Meanwhile, plasma calcium concentration was lower in LZ treated hens ( Deng et al., 2010 ), with a reduction in calcium-binding protein in the duodenum ( Li et al., 2018 ) and a decline in estrogen receptors ( Deng et al., 2010 ; Li et al., 2018 ). Taken together, these studies demonstrate that higher levels of E 2 are associated with medullary bone formation, while lower levels support the formation of cortical bone.…”

“…The highest expression levels of TRPV6 mRNA were found in the duodenum of laying hens, followed by the jejunum and ileum (Yang et al, 2011). The protein expression levels of CaBP-D28k and PMCA1b were higher in the duodenum than in the jejunum and ileum (Sugiyama et al, 2007;Li et al, 2018). Vitamin D regulates Ca transporter gene expression levels after binding VDR.…”

“…CaBP-D9k is found in the small intestine of mammals, whereas CaBP-D28k is expressed in the poultry intestine. Four Ca transporter genes (i.e., TRPV6, CaBP-D28k, PMCAlb, and NCX1) were successfully cloned in the small intestine of laying hens (Sugiyama et al, 2007;Yang et al, 2011;Li et al, 2018). The highest expression levels of TRPV6 mRNA were found in the duodenum of laying hens, followed by the jejunum and ileum (Yang et al, 2011).…”
