Levels and Aggregation of Ribosomes during Dormancy and Dormancy Break of Peach Flower Buds

Abstract: The level of ribosomes and their aggregation state (monosomes‐polysomes) have been investigated in relation to dormancy in peach flower buds (Prunus persica). The ribosomes were analysed by a linear sucrose gradient. The ribosomal content hardly changes in the bud before dormancy and until dormancy breaks; on the other hand after this period there is a remarkable increase in the ribosomal level strictly related to the increase in bud weight. The ribosomal content reaches the highest value at flowering. During … Show more

“…The constant amount of ribosomes per g of fresh weight results in an increase in the rihosome content in a bud while it grows during the autumn and again during the spring. This is in accordance with previous information about the amount of total RNA in similar buds (Kupila-Ahvenniemi 1966,1970, it also agrees with the results of Bagni et al, (1977) on peach flower buds.…”

“…In flower buds of peach, the polyribosomes were present already before dormancy and remained constant during the whole dormancy. They increased at breaking of dormancy and reached their highest level at flowering (Bagni et al 1977). In pine buds, the cytosoiic ribosomes decreased highly signiflcantly during the winter, and increased in the spring (Hiiggman et al 1985).…”

“…Yet there seems to be a crucial demand by the common hornbeam in the colder quarter of the year when trees are considered to be dormant. Dormancy is usually stated as a period in which visible growth is not obviously apparent (Saure, 1985), but cell division and differentiation, tissue growth continue to occur at low temperatures in a slow and steady manner, and there is also active synthesis of RNA and protein during dormancy (Bagni et al, 1977). The corresponding response curve (Fig.1A) may indicate the need for a sufficient energy supply to support these processes.…”
