Levels of selected pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in cerebrospinal fluid in patients with hydrocephalus

Abstract: Cytokines are widely known mediators of inflammation accompanying many neurodegenerative disorders including normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). NPH is caused by impaired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) absorption and treated by surgical shunt insertion. The early diagnosis of NPH is difficult because of various manifestations of the disease. One of the most promising research directions is biochemical CSF analysis. The aim of this study was to determine the CSF levels of cytokines. The levels of various cytokin… Show more

“…The pro-in ammatory cytokines that stand out as elevated are IL-6 and IL-8, which is in line with previously published literature on neurologic damage in hydrocephalus 29 . IL-6 is a major cytokine involved in development, neurogenesis, brain injury and neurodegeneration, in addition to mounting an immune response and inducing astrogliosis, astrocyte proliferation, and angiogenesis for recovery in the central nervous system 30,31 .…”

“…We report IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 to be the major inflammatory cytokines of interest as they consistently stand out by being significantly elevated. This is in-line with previously published work on neurologic damage in hydrocephalus [36]. IL-6 is a multi-functional, major cytokine involved in development, neurogenesis, brain injury and neurodegeneration, in addition to mounting an immune response and inducing astrogliosis, astrocyte proliferation, and angiogenesis for recovery in the central nervous system [37,38].…”

“…We think that it is hard to conclude this point due to the small sample size of this study. In terms of CSF marker, elevated IL-6 and -8 were reported in patients with iNPH [72,73]. These findings are the same as SZ population as reviewed in [74].…”
