Levels of trust in risk-only negative health messages issued by public agencies: a quantitative research-based mindsponge framework

Abstract: Trust in messengers is essential for a public agency to ensure effective benefit-risk communication. However, there is insufficient research on the difference in trust between risk-only or benefit-and-risk messages that deal with negative topics. To clarify these differences, this study used three radiation topics to determine the best benefit-risk communication design. We conducted a randomized comparative study in November 2020 on 1100 Japanese individuals (550 men and 550 women), who were allocated either t… Show more

“…Based on mindsponge mechanism, after being exposed to new digital information then humans will multi-filtering it by using subjective cost-benefit judgment and assessing its compatibility with the existing mindset [33]. Trust in the information provider may be a bypass of the multi-filter human mind's information processing which is essential for public resources in ensuring effective communication [34]. The presence or absence of trust affects information absorption after moving to the multi-filtering system stage.…”

“…Mindsponge Theory is a novel theory of how the human mind possesses and processes information, which was developed upon the mindsponge mechanism and the most recent evidence in the field of life science and neuroscience Vuong & Napier, 2015). The theory has been widely applied to a variety of socio-psychological studies, including environmental psychology (Asamoah et al, 2023;Jin et al, 2023;Kantabutra & Ketprapakorn, 2021;Khuc, Dang, et al, 2023;Khuc et al, 2022;Khuc, Tran, et al, 2023;Kumar et al, 2022;Li et al, 2022;Nguyen, Le, et al, 2023;Nguyen & Vuong, 2021;Ruining & Xiao, 2022;Santirocchi et al, 2023;Shu et al, 2023;Tanemura et al, 2022;Vuong, Le, et al, 2023;Zeng et al, 2022).…”

“…This approach posits that information serves as the fundamental basis for constructing physical reality, hence facilitating the exploration of intricate phenomena that need a multidisciplinary understanding (Davies and Gregersen 2014). Numerous studies have employed the theory as a foundational framework to explore socio-psychological phenomena, encompassing the domains of environmental and conservation psychology (Nguyen and Jones 2022a, b, Asamoah et al 2023, Cheng et al 2023, Kumar et al 2022, Tanemura et al 2022, Jiang et al 2022, Santirocchi et al 2023.…”
