Effects of a ChatGPT-based flipped learning guiding approach on learners’ courseware project performances and perceptions

In recent decades, flipped learning has been adopted by teachers to improve learning achievement. However, it is challenging to provide all students with instant personalised guidance at the same time. To address this gap, based on Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) and the learning scaffolding theory, I developed a ChatGPT-based flipped learning guiding approach (ChatGPT-FLGA) according to the analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation model. To investigate the effectiveness of ChatGPT-FLGA, a quasi-experiment was conducted in the learning activities of a courseware project. One of two classes was randomly assigned to the experimental group, while the other was assigned to the control group. The students in both classes received flipped classroom instruction and conducted discussions through Tencent QQ applications, but only those in the experimental group learned with ChatGPT-FLGA. The results revealed that the ChatGPT-FLGA significantly improved students’ performance, self-efficacy, learning attitudes, intrinsic motivation and creative thinking. The research findings enrich the literature on ChatGPT in flipped classrooms by addressing the influence of ChatGPT-FLGA on students' performance and perceptions. Implications for practice or policy: Teachers and universities should utilise ChatGPT as a tool for supporting students’ learning and promoting their problem-solving skills. Course designers and academic staff can leverage ChatGPT-FLGA to enact student-centred pedagogical transformation in massive open online courses or flipped learning. Course designers should master how to use ChatGPT-FLGA and its learning system, to foster learners’ self-regulated learning, help them promote online self-efficacy and overcome difficulties in learning motivation and creative thinking ability.

Purpose This article investigates the application of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in experiential learning for authentic assessment in higher education. Recognized for its human-like content generation, GenAI has garnered widespread interest, raising concerns regarding its reliability, ethical considerations and overall impact. The purpose of this study is to explore the transformative capabilities and limitations of GenAI for experiential learning. Design/methodology/approach The study uses “thing ethnography” and “incremental prompting” to delve into the perspectives of ChatGPT 3.5, a prominent GenAI model. Through semi-structured interviews, the research prompts ChatGPT 3.5 on critical aspects such as conceptual clarity, integration of GenAI in educational settings and practical applications within the context of authentic assessment. The design examines GenAI’s potential contributions to reflective thinking, hands-on learning and genuine assessments, emphasizing the importance of responsible use. Findings The findings underscore GenAI’s potential to enhance experiential learning in higher education. Specifically, the research highlights GenAI’s capacity to contribute to reflective thinking, hands-on learning experiences and the facilitation of genuine assessments. Notably, the study emphasizes the significance of responsible use in harnessing the capabilities of GenAI for educational purposes. Originality/value This research showcases the application of GenAI in operations management education, specifically within lean health care. The study offers insights into its capabilities by exploring the practical implications of GenAI in a specific educational domain through thing ethnography and incremental prompting. Additionally, the article proposes future research directions, contributing to the originality of the work and opening avenues for further exploration in the integration of GenAI in education.

To better understand the current challenges surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in K-12 schools, a team of researchers (Raffaella Borasi, David E. Miller, Patricia Vaughan-Brogan, Karen DeAngelis, Yu Jung Han, and Sharon Mason) interviewed 36 western New York school leaders in late 2023. Their concerns moved beyond potential cheating, as they instead identified four main priorities: receiving guidance to inform their decisions about AI, empowering all stakeholders to better understand AI and its implications, capitalizing on AI to support the work of teachers and staff, and enabling better technology solutions. These should inform future interventions aiming at leveraging AI in K-12 education.
