Life cycle analysis of solvent reduction in pharmaceutical synthesis using continuous adsorption for palladium removal

Abstract: The life cycle emissions associated with the reduction of wastes from an adsorption process to remove palladium complexes in drug manufacture have been evaluated. The study assessed a green improvement to a process step in an active pharmaceutical ingredient synthesis where palladium catalyst is removed from a reaction mixture. The greener process uses a continuous adsorption system, composed of a more efficient adsorbent, consuming less organic solvent and rinse water, which results in less waste disposal. Th… Show more

“…Most notably, there is a large use of solvents during the production of the NPs, in particular in the PS, where solvent inputs range from about 15 (for PbSe NPs) to 1800 (for CdS NPs) kg/kg NP. The high solvent use is in the same order of magnitude as the solvent use for pharmaceutical production, which can typically range from 25 to more than 100 kg/kg active pharmaceutical ingredient . The PWCs also constitute large inputs in the NP production unit processes in the PS, ranging from about 60 to 800 kg/kg NPs.…”

“…Many of the pharmaceutical companies studied are engaging with these principles and other solutions unique to the pharmaceutical industry and drug manufacturing process. The emission reduction potential of green chemistry principles, streamlined batch production, and optimizing pharmaceutical packaging have been demonstrated through several life cycle assessments published in the literature [ 45 , 46 , 47 ].…”

“…The qualitative comparison of results in Table 2 are as follows; in the raw material extraction and processing phase, the use of chemicals and solvents, the use of fossil energy and intensive water consumption are examples of issues for the TPC, and a decreased total demand of resources can be expected for the CPC (Slater et al, 2013). In the social dimension, it is likely to encounter issues with work conditions for the TPC, and no change can be expected for the CPC.…”
