Life cycle assessment of Indonesian canned crab (Portunus pelagicus)

Abstract: Indonesia is an archipelagic country with abundant marine wealth that makes it the world's second largest producer of fish after China. While most of Indonesia's capture marine fisheries (80%) are consumed domestically, around 90% of blue swimming crab (BSC) products are exported, mainly in cans. This makes up almost half of all BSC products on the global market, with the United States and the European Union being the main importers. We carried out a life cycle assessment (LCA) of canned BSC products from Indo… Show more

“…The study also included within the system boundaries the valorization, mainly for fishmeal production, of the organic waste flows derived from the processing of albacore into the final products delivered to consumers. The study by Wiloso et al (2022) focused on the canning industry for Indonesian crab ( Portunus pelagicus ), which is mainly exported to Europe. The results, in line with previous studies in Europe (Hospido et al., 2006; Vázquez‐Rowe et al., 2014), show that the tin used in the canning stage is the most impacting activity, although substantial reductions in environmental impact are shown for crabs caught with nets rather than traps.…”

“…The authors also noted the very high emissions linked to the seafood products that are exported through airfreight. Cortés et al (2022), Fernández-Ríos et al (2022 and Wiloso et al (2022) studied the environmental profile of three seafood products that are mainly consumed within the European Union. Cortés and colleagues (2022) analyzed the great scallop (Pecten maximus) fishery in Galicia (NW Spain), which showed a considerably high fuel use intensity value as compared to other seafood products landed in this important fishing region in Atlantic Europe.…”

“…It looks like there is already an agreement between pond farmers and sellers in terms of buying and selling so that pond crabs from farmers can only be distributed to sellers in Watu Village. Crabs are one of the leading commodities with high economic value (Bondad-Reantaso et al, 2022;Wiloso et al, 2022), so they are one of the targets for catches by fishermen and farmers in the sea and ponds.…”
