Life‐cycle, drift and production of Gammarus pulex L. (Amphipoda) in a Danish spring

Abstract: Gammarus pulex L. was studied at three sites in a Danish spring. Breeding took place during the summer and therefore cohorts could be followed. Sexual maturity was not reached until the next summer and maximum age appeared to be two years.Changes in population size differed between stations and was tentatively related to differences in drift and numbers of predators. Generally the drift was non-selective between cohorts and within cohorts.Yearly production estimated from production curves was 2.6 g dry weight … Show more

“…In our case, the maximal individual growth rate was 4.05% dry weight day −1 . The secondary production of G. fossarum in the Prosiečanka stream was similar as Iversen & Jessen (1977) found in G. pulex in the headwater streams. On the other hands P/B ratios were significantly different.…”

“…The single report in the literature of a correlation between drift and production where both were simultaneously measured is that of Pearson and Kramer (1972), who found a direct correlation over a 2-year period for the caddisfly Oligophlebodes sigma in a Utah mountain stream. Iversen and Jessen (1977) reported drift and production for Gammarus pulex, but the nature of their data did not permit a test of correlation. Virtually no instance of drift having caused a depopulation in upstream reaches, even when drift rates were high and upstream reaches were examined, has been reported (Elliott 1967;Ulfstrand 1968;Schuhmacher 1969;Miiller 1974).…”

“…All weight units are dry weight. Iversen and Jessen (1977) reported 38 kg. ha-l for Gammurus pulex in a Danish spring, and Welton (1979) reported nearly 130 kg* ha-r for the same species in an English stream.…”

“…S2 for exact dates for both sites) and checked it against previous descriptions of the life cycle of gammarids (e.g. Hynes, 1955;Iversen and Jessen, 1977;Pöckl et al, 2003). Water temperature was measured daily.…”
