Life Cycle Inventories for the Nuclear and Natural Gas Energy Systems, and Examples of Uncertainty Analysis (14 pp)

Abstract: tory data should reconsider production and transport from Russia, as it is a major producer and exporter to Europe. The calculated ranges of uncertainty factors in ecoinvent provide useful information but they are more indications of uncertainties rather than strict 95% intervals, and should therefore be applied carefully.

“…Subsequently, Table 2 (Lawson, 2007); the LCA SO 2 emission factor of aggregates is 1.48x10 -5 kg/kg, which has been calculated considering that the bulk density of sand and gravel is 1300-2000 kg/m 3 and of clay at mine is 2000 kg/m 3 (Kellenberger et al, 2007;Korre and Durucan, 2009 (Dones et al. 2007) e (Fritsche and Rausch.…”

“…What is interesting about the data presented in Figure 8 is that Denmark, despite generating almost 50% of its electricity from wind, has a higher GWP score than Turkey. It has been shown in the literature that Germany, another country in which the share of renewables in the overall electricity mix is also high, has a higher GWP score than Turkey as well [28]. The relatively high GWP score of Denmark can be attributed to the abundance of off-shore wind power plants, whose construction requires steel and cement, and the production of these materials are highly energy-intensive [29].…”

“…For example, the embedded emissions of CO 2 in a unit of electricity produced with hydro-power are significantly less than a unit of electricity produced with coal. Also, Hondo (2005), Dones et al (2004) and Weisser (2007) note that the upstream 1 emissions of power plants are very different. Coal and gas power plants have up to 25% of total emissions embodied in upstream emissions because they require extraction and transport of resources before combustion, whereas upstream emissions of nuclear power and renewable energy technologies are lower than 10%.…”
