Life cycle inventory processes of the integrated steel plant (ISP) in Krakow, Poland—coke production, a case study

Abstract: Purpose The goal of this paper is to describe the life cycle inventory (LCI) approach to the cokemaking process in the Integrated Steel Plant's Coke Oven Battery (ISPCOB) in Kraków, Poland. The system boundaries were labeled as gate-to-gate, covering the full chain process of coke production. The background input and output data from the coke production process (CPP) has been inventoried. Methods The functional unit (FU) was produced of 1 Mg of the coke in ISPCOB. The following inputs and outputs have been tak… Show more

“…In scientific literature, several papers on the application of LCA within the steel industry have been published, e.g. (Bieda 2014;Bieda et al 2015;Burchart-Korol 2011;Cullen et al 2012Cullen et al , 2012. All identified and analyzed approaches deal with the issue of environmental performance regarding greenhouse gases.…”

“…For this study, the functional unit for the quantitative reference to which a normalization of the LCI dataset has to be carried out (Roy et al 2009;Sonnemann et al 2004), was defined as one t crude steel. This performance measure, which is the crucial concept in LCA (Bieda et al 2015) and highlighted in the DIN ISO 14044 framework, allows a comparison (Kndungu and Molavi 2014) of the selected sample of manufacturers as crude steel is the output product of all examined sites. The model includes all emissions, intermediate products, process gases and energy supply directly related to the manufacturing of crude steel.…”

“…Coke acts as reducing agent in furnaces smelting iron ore to produce liquid iron which is an essential ingredient in the steel manufacturing, the core business of ArcelorMittal South Africa. Coke is the material left when water, coal-gas and coal-tar are driven off during the carbonization of coal at temperatures around 1100 o C in an air-tight oven, a process refers as cokemaking or coking [37]. The coking process often takes place in a coke battery in which coal is loaded; this battery is composed of many coke ovens stacked in rows and often located at or near an integrated steel mill.…”
