Life estimation and investigation of dielectric strength of multistressed high‐voltage epoxy micro and nanocomposites

Abstract: Epoxy/silica micro and nanocomposites are prepared and subjected to multiple accelerated stresses along with neat epoxy for 9000 h in a specially fabricated chamber. Leakage current measurements were recorded after each weather cycle. Dielectric strength was also evaluated according to ASTM-D149 after each 1000 h ageing. In the course of ageing time, neat epoxy was found with high dielectric loss and random rise in leakage current. In the case of both micro and nanocomposites, these properties indicated improv… Show more

“…Polymeric insulators offered numerous compensations as compared to the traditional insulation [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]. The advantages of polymeric insulation include higher resistance to flashovers, resistance to contaminations, better dielectric properties, higher tensile strength, ease of installation, less maintenance and lower cost [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Due to their superior properties, polymers find their usage as high voltage insulation and dielectric applications [ 7 , 8 ].…”

“…If electrical applications of both types are compared, epoxy material gives much better properties during usage, which makes it a first choice for modern electrical power systems [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Epoxy insulators have better resistance to mechanical stress, flashovers, anti-tracking, and erosion [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Epoxy resins also possess tremendous properties which can be used as insulators (for example, better hydrophobicity, better mechanical strength, high dielectric strength, and easy processing for usage in power systems) [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…Among different classes of fillers, inorganic oxides have been proved favorable for acquiring mandatory enlargement in nano/micro polymer dielectrics [ 29 , 30 ]. The literature shows that by the addition of inorganic fillers, an increased dielectric constant with low heat dissipation can be achieved.…”
