“…Dermatologic surgeons will therefore increasingly need to focus on the safety of managing skin cancers in this population. Delaney and colleagues demonstrated the safety of performing MMS in nonagenarians . In their series of 214 patients, there were no major complications or deaths and no detectable difference in the complication rate for procedures performed in an ambulatory private practice setting and a hospital‐based academic clinic.…”
The rate of complications associated with dermatologic surgeons performing interpolated flaps in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia is low. Our complication rates are equal to or lower than published complication rates from other surgical specialties.

“…As noted earlier, the most‐recent multicenter study evaluating the safety of Mohs surgery concluded that fewer than 1% of patients experienced an adverse event . Most pertinent to this discussion is that, when a nonagenarian cohort of 214 patients was followed after skin cancer resection, fewer than 0.5% experienced a complication . These data highlight that the complications in the Linos and colleagues study are not complications.…”

“…17 Notably, no deaths have been reported as a complication of MMS, despite advanced age and multiple comorbidities. 20 Recent evidence also reveals that infection rates are unaffected by the use of nonsterile compared to sterile gloves during MMS and reconstruction, reinforcing the safety of outpatient dermatologic surgery. [21][22][23] Because electrosurgery is an integral component of dermatologic surgery, it is also important to consider the safety of these methods on an outpatient basis.…”
