Life history characteristics of a lightly exploited stock of Squalus suckleyi

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the basic life history of a lightly exploited stock of Squalus suckleyi in the Gulf of Alaska to establish a baseline for future comparison and to provide critical information for stock assessments. Average total length (total length extended) of females (87·7 cm) was significantly larger (t-test, t = -12·57, d.f. = 1533, P < 0·01) than males (80·3 cm); size at 50% maturity (74·5 and 97·3 cm, males and females, respectively) and age at 50% maturity (21 and 36 years, res… Show more

“…Reproductive output in deepwater hexanchoid and squalid sharks is generally limited but can be up to 108 pups/litter in the Bluntnose Sixgill Shark Hexanchus griseus (Kyne and Simpfendorfer 2010), a large-bodied (~480 cm TL), mostly deepwater shark that occurs in the northeast Pacific Ocean (Compagno 1984). In contrast, the average fecundity of Pacific Spiny Dogfish in the GOA is about 8.0 ± 4 pups/litter (mean ± SD; Tribuzio and Kruse 2012).…”

“…For example, deepwater sharks often exhibit a resting period between parturition and the next ovulation, thus extending the reproductive cycle (Kyne and Simpfendorfer 2010). A biennial reproductive cycle has been observed in Pacific Spiny Dogfish within the GOA (Tribuzio and Kruse 2012). The seasonality of the Pacific Sleeper Shark's reproductive cycle is also unknown.…”

“…Positive maternal size-litter size relationships were also recorded for S. megalops in south-eastern Australia (Braccini et al, 2006); for S. cf. mitsukurii from Hawaiian waters (Cotton et al, 2011); for Pacific spiny dogfish Squalus suckleyi (Girard 1855) in the Gulf of Alaska (Tribuzio & Kruse, 2012). Therefore, for species such as S. chloroculus, where fecundity is related to maternal size, larger body size in females is likely be an advantageous characteristic selected for during its evolution (Mejía-Falla et al, 2012).…”

“…Biological and ecological parameters such as growth, reproductive characteristics, food preferences, feeding habits and habitat range are necessary for managing shark stocks. There is surprisingly little information on the SPD in the western North Pacific (Mikawa, 1971;Orlov, Kulish, Mukhametov, & Shubin, 2011;Sato, 1935;Tanabe et al, 1958) compared with those that inhabit the eastern North Pacific, particularly in recent years (Beamish, Thomson, & McFarlane, 1992;Gallucci, McFarlane, & Bargmann, 2009;Jones & Geen, 1977;Saunders & McFarlane, 1993;Tribuzio & Kruse, 2012;Tribuzio, Kruse, & Fujioka, 2010).…”
