The relationship between temperament and character traits and anger response styles in university studentsObjective: The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between temperament and character and anger and anger response styles in late adolescent undergraduate university students.Method: In this study, 227 university students aged between 18 and 25 years volunteered to participate. Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI), State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI), and a Personal Information Form (PIF) prepared by one of the researchers were administered. Results:The study found correlations between temperament and character and anger and anger response styles. While a positive correlation was found between trait anger and novelty seeking and harm avoidance, a negative correlation was found between trait anger and reward dependence, self-directedness, and cooperativeness. A positive correlation was found between anger-in and harm avoidance, a negative correlation was found between anger-in and reward dependence, self-directedness, and cooperativeness.A positive correlation was found between anger-out and novelty seeking while a negative correlation was found between reward dependence, self-directedness, and cooperativeness. Finally, a positive correlation was found between anger control and reward dependence, self-directedness and cooperativeness, while a negative correlation was found between anger control and novelty seeking. In addition to these results, some variables have an impact on temperament and anger response styles. Conclusion:Our study is important in that it demonstrates a number of correlations between temperament and character traits and anger response styles. In order to examine the relation between anger and temperament in more detail, it seems necessary to carry out studies with younger adolescents. BackgroundAntisocial personality and psychopathic traits have constantly been found to accompany criminal and aggressive behaviors, but little attention has been given to aspects of character maturity and its relation to such behaviors. The present study investigated (1) whether level of character maturity (low, medium, and high) is associated with amount of aggressive antisocial behaviors (AABs) and psychopathic traits in young men imprisoned for violent criminality, and (2) whether such an association is independent of coexisting attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).MethodsSwedish males (N = 270, aged 18–25) sentenced to prison for violent and/or sexual criminality in the western region of the Swedish Prison and Probation Service underwent a thorough clinical examination during their incarceration. Data on character maturity, as measured by the character dimensions Self-Directedness and Cooperativeness of the Temperament and Character Inventory, were available for n = 148 subjects and were used to divide these offenders into three groups with low, medium, and high character maturity. These groups were then compared for variables reflecting criminal history, a DSM-IV diagnosis of ADHD, conduct disorder (CD) and substance use disorders (SUD), aggressive behaviors, and psychopathic traits.ResultsCharacter maturity was consistently associated with less AABs and psychopathic personality traits; the group with the highest character maturity showed: (i) a later age at onset of criminality, (ii) a smaller number of prior violent criminal acts, (iii) lower prevalence of ADHD, CD, and SUD, (iv) less self-rated and expert-rated aggressive behaviors, and (v) less psychopathic traits. The association between character maturity and aggressive behaviors/psychopathic personality traits remained even when ADHD was controlled for. The only exception was sexual criminality, where the group with the highest character maturity contained the largest amount of sexual offenders.ConclusionHigher character maturity appeared to be a protective factor among young male violent offenders, associated with less AABs, suggesting that character maturity is a promising target for treatment interventions for this group of individuals.

This study examined the latent structure and validity of inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, and sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) symptomatology. We evaluated mother and teacher ratings of ADHD and SCT symptoms in 140 Puerto Rican children (55.7% males), ages 6 to 11 years, via factor and regression analyses. A three-factor model (inattention, hyperactivity-impulsivity, and SCT) provided the best fit for both sets of ratings. Inattention was the strongest correlate of lower scores on neuropsychological, achievement, and psychosocial measures. Externalizing problems were most strongly associated with hyperactivity-impulsivity, and internalizing problems were most strongly associated with parent-rated SCT and teacher-rated Inattention. SCT was not associated with executive function but was negatively associated with math. Inattention accounted for a disproportionate amount of ADHD-related impairment, which may explain the restricted discriminant validity of DSM-IV types. The distinct factors of hyperactivity-impulsivity and SCT had unique associations with impairing comorbidities and are roughly equivalent in predicting external correlates of ADHD-related impairment.
