Life satisfaction prevents decline in working memory, spatial cognition, and processing speed: Latent change score analyses across 23 years

Abstract: Background. Within-person growth in life satisfaction (LS) can protect against declines in cognitive functioning, and, conversely, over time. However, most studies have been crosssectional, thereby precluding causal inferences. Thus, we used bivariate dual latent change score modeling to test within-person change-to-future change relations between LS and cognition. Method. Community adults completed in-person tests of verbal working memory (WM), processing speed, spatial cognition, and an LS self-report. Five … Show more

“…This is especially true since previous research has linked higher life satisfaction to improved outcomes on physical functioning [41] and cognition [8] during the subsequent time period. The literature even suggests the bidirectional relationship between cognition and life satisfaction [9]. Second, it should be recognized that life satisfaction scores for the MMSE levels of under 10 may not be reliable [25].…”

“…In this context, life satisfaction is regarded as an indicator of successful aging that is commonly measured among older people [7]. Therefore, life satisfaction and its association with cognitive function have been examined among older people [8,9]. In particular, cognitive impairment in old age has been associated with lower quality of life [10], and overall and social life satisfaction levels [11].…”

“…Processing speed is defined as capacity to fulfill rudimentary or intricate tasks that require persistent attention efficiently. 69 As for SZ patients, processing speed is the most severely impaired, which patients’ average performance is about 1.5 standard deviations lower than that of healthy controls. 70 The presence of myelinated white matter (WM) facilitates efficient electrical signal transmission, thereby contributing to the overall speed of neural communication in the brain.…”
