Life Space Assessment in Stroke Patients

Abstract: ObjectiveTo evaluate the reliability of the practical life space in post-stroke patients using the Korean version of the Life-Space Assessment (K-LSA) questionnaire and to assess the relationships between the K-LSA and physical function, daily activity, quality of life, and post-stroke depression.MethodsThe LSA questionnaire was translated into Korean, and the translated version was authorized by the author of the LSA questionnaire. In a cross-sectional study, the performance of the K-LSA was evaluated in 34 s… Show more

“…The instrument has excellent test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.95–0.97) [ 42 ]. In stroke survivors, the test–retest reliability in terms of the kappa statistic was found to be 0.99 [ 43 ]. A Cantonese version, which was translated from the original English version [ 42 ] based on Beaton et al’s guidelines [ 44 ], was adopted in this study.…”

“…LSA scores correlate positively with physical performance and self-reported health (r s = 0.42–0.60), and negatively with functional measures, comorbid conditions, and depressive symptoms (r s = − 0.91 to − 0.41) in older people 8 . Among outpatients with stroke in a medical center, the test–retest reliability in terms of the kappa statistic has been shown to be 0.99, and LSA scores also correlate significantly with the scores of Functional Ambulation Categories (r = 0.85) and the mobility subscale of the Functional Independence Measure (r = 0.76) 10 . A lower life-space score has been found to be significantly associated with stroke in older Mexican-Americans 11 .…”

“…Frailty was initially assessed using Life Space Level (LSL). LSL is a component of the Life Space Assessment Score [10], which is widely used in the functional assessment of elderly patients [1820]. LSL was scored by asking a patient how far he/she could move independently without limitations before the onset of the symptoms of critical illnesses, and it ranged from one’s bedroom (score = 0) to one’s town (score = 5).…”
