Life Span of Thrombocytes and Erythrocytes in Normal and Thrombocytopenic Calves

Abstract: 1. Bovine thrombocytes and erythrocytes became labeled with P32 following an intramuscular injection of DFP.32 2. The life span of bovine thrombocytes calculated from survival curves of DFP32-labeled thrombocytes was about 10 days. 3. The life span of bovine erythrocytes calculated from the linear portion of the survival curve was about 110 to 120 days. 4. There was no significant difference between the life span of the thrombocytes and erythrocytes from normal calv… Show more

“…In goats the total number of platelets reported by WILKINS and HODGES (1962) was 421,000. In cattle, the count recorded by MIZUNO et al (1959) was even higher (800,000).…”

“…One possible explanation for the observed discrepancy between the 32P-labeled diisopropyl fluorophosphate and 5tCr labeling data is the reported effect of high doses of 32P-labeled diisopropyl fluorophosphate upon platelet behavior in vitro and in vivo (9,26). An alternate explanation may be reutilization of 32P-labeled blood components for the production of new platelets (11,25). This phenomenon accounts for the "tailing" of 52P-labeled platelet survival C e FIG.…”

“…Anaemia, thrombocytopenia and neutropenia can be ascribed to depression of normal haematopoietic cells in the bone marrow. Due to the short residence time of granulocytes in peripheral blood and the short life span of thrombocytes (approximately 10 days), it seems reasonable that in the current case thrombocytopenia and neutropenia were severe [ 28 ]. Despite the relatively long lifespan of red blood cells in healthy calves (about 110–120 days), myelophthisis may affect the erythroid lineage of a growing animal with an expanding blood volume more severely than an adult being suffering from acute leukaemia.…”
