“…In support of this is accumulating evidence that a range of putative environmental measures used in the behavioral sciences are influenced by genetic factors (29,30). Social support has been shown to predict a wide variety of medical and psychiatric outcomes, including coronary artery disease (31,32), pregnancy complications (33), depression (34), and alcoholism (35), although the mechanisms by which social support affects these diseases may not be straightforward (36).…”

“…Social support has been shown to moderate the effects of stress on perinatal outcomes; however, the perception of support is a more important indicator of positive outcomes than the amount or presence of support (Molfese, et al, 1987). Norbeck & Tilden (1983) conducted a prospective, multivariate study that found significant effects from life stress, social support and their interaction accounted for 20.8% of the variance in pregnancy complications, 5.7% in labor complications, and 9.1% of infant complications. The results support the goal of early identification and intervention to reduce the detrimental outcomes of increased life stress, low social support, and emotional disequilibrium.…”

It represents a paradigm shift for the family (Malnory, 1996) who must adjust to changes in income and expenditure, home and social life, parenting roles, and self-image.…”
