Life-style and Other Characteristics of Radiation Workers at Nuclear Facilities in Japan: Base-line Data of a Questionnaire Survey.

Abstract: To examine confounding on the risk assessment of the radiation workers at nuclear facilities in Japan, a questionnaire survey of their characteristics such as life-style and occupational history was performed for 54,369 male and 470 female workers who were currently engaged in the job and valid answers were obtained from 48,281 males and 428 females. In order to know whether these characteristics were different among different dose groups, the Mantel extension statistical test was performed only for male respo… Show more

“…Factors such as smoking can confound the association between radiation dose and risk only if they are related both to risk of cancer and to dose. Some cohort studies have found an association between radiation dose and smoking,17 18 while others have not 1921…”

“…Thus, the possibility of confounding by smoking depends on how much smoking is correlated with radiation dose; this varies from population to population. Our Japanese cohort showed a strong confounding effect of smoking [12,13].…”

“…The study results through 1997 have already been published as the first, second, and most recent analyses [10][11][12], which reported the possibility of lifestyle factors confounding the relationship between radiation dose and cancer mortality among nuclear workers in Japan. To examine non-radiation factors among nuclear workers, the IRE conducted lifestyle questionnaire surveys among different samples of workers in 1997 and 2003, finding a positive correlation between radiation doses and smoking rates [13]. This correlation means that adjustment for smoking actually reduces radiation risk estimates.…”

“…Benzene is an established myeloid leukemogen. 36,37) We administered a lifestyle questionnaire survey from 1997 38) and 2003 to a sample of worker and obtained information on the occupational history of benzene. However, there were no deceased with an occupational history of benzene, so we could not discuss benzene's effect.…”
