Life-Threatening Sochi Virus Infections, Russia

Abstract: Sochi virus was recently identified as a new hantavirus genotype carried by the Black Sea field mouse, Apodemus ponticus. We evaluated 62 patients in Russia with Sochi virus infection. Most clinical cases were severe, and the case-fatality rate was as high as 14.5%.

“…Partial nucleotide sequences of S, M, and L segments amplified from serum derived from the DOBV-Sochi patient were deposited in GenBank (accession numbers KU529946, KU529944 and KU529945). The sequences showed high similarity to DOBV-Sochi sequences obtained from Black Sea field mice ( Apodemus ponticus ) and from a fatal case of hantavirus disease reported in a 47-year-old woman in the district of Krasnodar in southern European Russia (Table 1) [13, 20, 21]. No pre-existing conditions, such as renal, pulmonary or cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension or obesity, were found.…”

“…Among Old World hantaviruses, DOBV genotype Sochi is characterized by severe clinical course and a high CFR of 14.5% [13]. In contrast, PUUV disease exhibits a low CFR of less than 1% [31].…”

“…Viruses account for the majority of newly emerging human pathogens. Over the past few years, many different viruses such as SARS coronavirus, MERS coronavirus, avian influenza viruses, hantaviruses, Zaire ebolavirus, or Zika virus have (re)emerged as human pathogens [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Vaccines are the most efficient and cost-effective tools to fight infectious diseases, particularly virus infections.…”

“…The main hantaviruses which cause human disease in Europe are Dobrava–Belgrade virus (DOBV) associated with Apodemus flavicollis , Apodemus agrarius , and Apodemus ponticus , and Puumala virus (PUUV) associated with Myodes glareolus . DOBV strains associated with A. flavicollis and A. ponticus have the potential to cause the most severe form of HFRS, which is characterized by fever, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, renal dysfunction, and hemorrhagic manifestations, with a fatality rate of approximately 10% [Papa, ; Kruger et al, ].…”
