“…The greatest reproductive intensities were registered from January to May for X. kroyeri and from September to November for F. subtilis, which is in agreement with the results from previous studies on these species in other regions of Brazil (SANTOS and IVO, 2000;SANTOS et al, 2001;CASTRO et al, 2005, SANTOS andFREITAS, 2006;ALMEIDA et al, 2012;HECKLER et al, 2013;CASTILHO et al, 2015). For L. schmitti, due the low number of reproductive females (≤ 11) and developed males (≤ 12) during all studied months, our results should be considered with caution.…”

“…When spermatophores were not visible through macroscopic observation in an adult male, the individual was classified as lacking spermatophores (LS). If spermatophores were visible and occupied a portion of or all terminal ampoules, males were classified as spermatophore-bearing males (MA) (Castilho et al, 2012(Castilho et al, , 2015. Males with gonads in the LS and MA stages were defined as adults, while those with gonads in the MA stage were considered reproductive males, and those with gonads in the IM stage were defined as recruits.…”

“…Studies of X. kroyeri along the São Paulo coast have focused on aspects of their population biology (Nakagaki and Negreiros-Fransozo, 1998;Castro et al, 2005), reproductive biology and recruitment (Almeida et al, 2012;Heckler et al, 2013a;Castilho et al, 2015), population dynamics (Heckler et al, 2013b), and abundance and distribution (Costa et al, 2007;Simões et al, 2010;Heckler et al, 2014a;2014b). However, most of these studies did not address variation in biomass and individual size through monthly samples.…”
