Lifetime Analysis of Commercial 3 W UV-A LED

Abstract: The lifetime of ultraviolet high-power light-emitting diodes (UV HP-LEDs) is an open issue due to their high current density, high temperature, and UV radiation. This work presents a reliability study and failure analysis of three high-temperature accelerated life tests (ALTs) for 13,500 h with 3 W commercial UV LEDs of 365 nm at a nominal current in two working conditions: continuous mode and cycled mode (30 s on/30 s off). Arrhenius–Weibull parameters were evaluated, and an equation to evaluate the lifetime … Show more

“…UV-7 was operated at an If value that was the lowest percentage of the maximum rated current for any of the products in the test matrix, but was operated at the same overall current as other comparable high-powered UV-C LEDs (e.g., UV-5, UV-6). Current densities used during RTOL-2 were generally lower than those found in most literature studies [14,15,17,20].…”

“…Although previous studies of the reliability of UV LEDs are more limited in scope than this report, there have been notable studies spanning the UV-A [12][13][14], UV-B [15,16], and UV-C [10, [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] bands. The forward current (If) densities in these studies ranged from 27 amps per square centimeter (A/cm 2 ) to 140 A/cm 2 .…”

“…The heat generated increases the LED junction temperature, reducing the light output, which is a major factor in the sterilization effect. Therefore, it is important to properly manage the operating temperature generated by the UVC LED irradiation ( Arques-Orobon et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Unlike the numerous publications analyzing the degradation behavior of blue and phosphor-converted LEDs, only a few papers were published regarding the degradation mechanisms and behavior of In 1−x Ga x N-based UV-A LEDs [13], [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21]. Compared directly with emitters of the blue spectral range, a significantly shorter lifetime of ultraviolet or near-ultraviolet structures can be observed [3].…”
