Lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation among men who have sex with men: a meta-analysis

Abstract: BackgroundSuicide is a leading cause of death among men who have sex with men (MSM) and suicidal ideation may put individuals at higher risk of suicide. A great disparity of lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation among MSM was observed across studies, indicating the importance of a reliable estimation of the pooled lifetime prevalence. However, the only one published meta-analysis estimating the pooled lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation among MSM was conducted in 2008 with only 2 eligible studies. Subs… Show more

“…Apparently, these gures are far higher than those reported in the general male population of China, for example, only 2.8% for lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation and 0.5% for lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts 42 . Our ndings was also basically consistent with a recent meta-analysis which presented that the lifetime prevalence of suicidal ideation among MSM was 25.8% in low-and middle-income countries 12 . Overall, the results highlighted that suicidality among MSM is a pressing issue and a great public health challenge for China.…”

“…As suggested by the aforementioned findings, MSM living with HIV may experience higher levels of stigma and trauma related to their sexual orientation 30 88. Compared with heterosexual counterparts, MSM reported higher risk for suicidal ideation,89 which also indicates greater psychological stress and mental health problems (ie, PTSD and depression). The findings that MSM and female HIV-infected individuals are at higher risk of developing PTSD may indicate that related health promotion campaigns should be directed to these groups.…”

“…Globally, men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately burdened by poor mental health [1][2][3]. Across geographic regions, studies consistently find that MSM experience elevated rates of mood and anxiety disorders as well as a higher burden of alcohol and substance use disorders compared to their heterosexual peers [4][5][6][7][8][9]. Such mental health disparities contribute to "syndemic" conditions surrounding HIV infection risk behaviors [10,11] and interfere with the uptake of HIV-related behavioral interventions among MSM [12].…”
