Lifetimes and Oscillator Strengths for Ultraviolet Transitions in Neutral Chlorine

Abstract: We present lifetime measurements using beam-foil techniques for radiative transitions from the 3p 4 ( 1 S)4s 2 S 1/2 , 3p 4 ( 3 P )5s 2 P 1/2,3/2 , and 3p 4 ( 3 P )3d 2 F 5/2 levels in Cl I and the corresponding results of the oscillator strengths for transitions at 1004.68, 1079.88, 1090.73, and 1094.77Å, respectively. We compare our experimental results with available theoretical calculations and astronomical observations in an effort to resolve discrepancies among them.

“…For many of these sight lines, we use observations of the Cl I λ1004, λ1094, or λ1097 transition, available from FUSE spectra, to help constrain the Cl I column density. Experimentally determined fvalues for the Cl I transitions at 1004.7 Å and 1094.8 Å were recently reported by Alkhayat et al (2019). These f-values, from beam-foil experiments, are in good agreement with the empirical f-values derived for these transitions by Sonnentrucker et al (2006).…”

“…However, there have been several significant improvements in oscillator strengths in the two decades since those compilations were published. New experimental f-values are now available for commonly observed transitions of P II (Federman et al 2007;Brown et al 2018), Cl I (Alkhayat et al 2019), Cl II (Schectman et al 2005), Cu II (Brown et al 2009), Ge II (Heidarian et al 2017), and Pb II (Heidarian et al 2015). In addition, empirically derived f-values have been determined for several transitions of Fe II (Miller et al 2007) and Ni II (Jenkins & Tripp 2006;Boissé & Bergeron 2019).…”
