Lifeways of Early Kantharodai, Sri Lanka

Abstract: In the 1st millennium BCE Sri Lanka was central to the wide-spanning trading networks in the Western Indian Ocean region. Population agglomerations grew on the coast and further inland, where Anuradhapura emerged as the major central place. Parallel agglomerations formed in the south in Tissamaharama and in the north on Jaffna Peninsula in Kantharodai. The site of Kantharodai on the northern tip of Sri Lanka is the largest known early historic mound site on the Jaffna Peninsula, thought to represent the ancien… Show more

“…In the latter stages of the Holocene, in addition to wild game, bones of domesticated animals occur in sites across Lanka (Benecke et al, 2022;S.U. Deraniyagala, 1992;Helwing et al, 2022;Kulatilake et al, 2018;. Evidence from palaeobotanical studies of the central regions have been used to infer early domestication of rice in the late Pleistocene/early Holocene (Premathilake, 2006).…”

“…Deraniyagala, 1992;Bandaranayake, 1996;Silva, 2004;Coningham & Young, 2015). In Lanka, Anuradhapura, Kantharodai, Matota (Manthai) and Mahagama (Tissamaharama) are such large settlements (or cities) (Deraniyagala, 1972;Coningham & Young, 2015;Helwing et al, 2022;Weisshaar & Wijeyapala). The earliest deciphered written records of South Asia appear on potsherds found in Anuradhapura.…”

“…Urban settlements of Kantharodai and other contemporaneous locations in the Jaffna peninsula (e.g., Anaikkottai, Karainagar, Velanai-Catti, and Mannittalai) have been assigned to Phase 1, dating from the fifth century BCE to the first century BCE (Perera, 2013). Recent archaeological excavations suggested that the occupation of Kantharodai dates between 400-100 BCE (Helwing et al, 2022). Evidence for self-sufficient settlement units with diverse subsistence patterns including a combination of farming, pastoralism, and lagoon fishing has been prevalent (Helwing et al, 2022;Ragupathy, 1987).…”
