Lifting the dust veil from the globular cluster Palomar 2

Abstract: This work employs high-quality Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) F606W and F814W photometry to correct for the differential reddening affecting the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the poorly-studied globular cluster (GC) Palomar 2. Differential reddening is taken into account by assuming that morphological differences among CMDs extracted across the field of view of Palomar 2 correspond essentially to shifts (quantified in terms of δE(B − V )) along the reddening vector due to a … Show more

“…Unfortunately, the distribution of gas and dust is filamentary, with significant changes in the extinction value on 1 comparable scales to the radius of a GC (e.g. Bonatto et al 2013;Saracino et al 2019;Bonatto & Chies-Santos 2020). While for M31, extinction can be modelled on the scales of ∼ 30 pc (e.g.…”

“…The globular cluster Palomar 2 is a distant (30 kpc) stellar system in the direction of the Galactic anticenter and close to the Galactic plane (l = 170.53 • , b = −9.07 • ). It is buried in dust with E(B − V ) ≈ 0.93 and shows evidence of differential reddening (Bonatto & Chies-Santos 2020). It is, therefore, a faint cluster with the HB at about V ≈ 21.5 (Harris 1996).…”

“…As a reference we included two isochrones from the models of VandenBerg et al (2014) for [Fe/H]=−1.6 and −2.0 and a theoretical horizontal branch built byYepez et al (2022). Isochrones and HB have been placed at a distance of 26.1 kpc(Bonatto & Chies-Santos 2020). Variable stars are indicated and discussed in § 5.…”
