Light magnetic dark matter in direct detection searches

Abstract: We study a fermionic Dark Matter particle carrying magnetic dipole moment and analyze its impact on direct detection experiments. In particular we show that it can accommodate the DAMA, CoGeNT and CRESST experimental results. Assuming conservative bounds, this candidate is shown not to be ruled out by the CDMS, XENON and PICASSO experiments. We offer an analytic understanding of how the long-range interaction modifies the experimental allowed regions, in the cross section versus Dark Matter mass parameter spac… Show more

“…The complex scalar has tree level interactions with the standard model Higgs field (Higgs portal type), whereas the dark matter particle has only loop-induced interactions with the standard model particles. The original motivation for this model was to construct an UV completion of the effective magnetic moment dark matter model [61] able to alleviate, at the time, the tension between the results of different DM direct detection experiments. The model phenomenology, including the dark matter and collider aspects, has been further studied in [43,60].…”

“…In the electric dipole case, χχ → ff is p-wave suppressed, and the relic density is too large, unless there are additional annihilation channels. Furthermore, Dirac DM models with such large dipole interactions are excluded by direct detection experiments [39,40].…”
