Light microscopy and ultrastructure of the liver of Astyanax altiparanae Garutti and Britski, 2000 (Teleostei, Characidae)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Livers of thirty specimens of Astyanax altiparanae obtained from a commercial fish farm were subjected to light and transmission electron microscopy, in order to describe the hepatic parenchyma and the intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue. Anatomically, the liver showed only three hepatic lobes. Histological analysis demonstrated that the hepatocytes were spread out as anastomotic cords, arranged in two cellular layers and surrounded by sinusoids. The intrahepatic exocrine pancreatic tissue exhibi… Show more

“…The cells are mostly organized in acini which contain eosinophilic zymogen granules, responsible for the production and storage of pancreatic digestive enzymes (Genten et al ., 2009). Similar findings were observed in the characids Oligosarcus jenynsii (Petcoff et al ., 2006) and lambari Astyanax altiparanae (Bertolucci et al ., 2008) and also in Ctenopharyngodon idella (Mokhtar, 2015), Labeo niloticus (Naguib et al ., 2009) and Huso huso (Sheibani & Yali, 2006) with no clear histological difference between strictly herbivorous fishes. The duct system of the pancreas of dourado consisted of intercalated, intralobular, interlobular and main pancreatic duct, which works together to deliver enzymes produced by the exocrine cells into the midgut segment (Liggitt & Dintzis, 2012).…”

“…Fish are a good biological model because they are constantly exposed to the environmental conditions and distributed in various trophic levels. Astyanax altiparanae (Garutti & Britski, 2000) Teleostei, Characidae, is a freshwater fish with a wide distribution in the Neotropical region; and presents an ecological and economic importance (Bertolucci et al, 2008). In addition to the biological model, the use of biomarkers is an advantageous tool to evaluate the sublethal effects in different levels of organization (Guiloski et al, 2017).…”
