Light Regulation of Nitrate Reductase in Higher Plants: Which Photoreceptors are Involved?

Abstract: The regulation by light of nitrate reductase (NR) in higher plants is very complex. NR is firstly regulated by transcriptional control. In etiolated plants, phytochrome is the main photoreceptor involved and its low fluence response (LFR) is the common response mode. The effect of the very low fluence response (VLFR) has been reported for one of the isoforms in Arabidopsis thaliana, NIA2. The existence of a far‐red light‐mediated high irradiance response (HIR) has been demonstrated in phytochrome A over‐expres… Show more

“…In previous studies, there was also little difference in electron flow between NO 3 2 and NH 4 + feedings in Arabidopsis and wheat (Triticum aestivum), which corresponded to lower leaf NO 3 2 reductase activity Rachmilevitch et al, 2004). Furthermore, nitrate reductase activity can decrease under lower light intensities, minimizing the impact of nitrate reduction to leaf energy balance under low PPFD (Pilgrim et al, 1993;Lillo and Appenroth, 2001).…”

“…Post-translational regulation of NR is also strongly influenced by light (Lillo 1994, Lillo andAppenroth 2001). Most of what is known about posttranslational NR regulation, with few exceptions (Appenroth et al 2000), has been deduced from experiments using green leaves in which mainly effects of photosynthetic active light have been studied.…”

“…NR induction mediated by phytochrome was first reported in etiolated peas in 1972 (Jones and Sheard). Since then the involvement of phytochrome in NR induction was established for a large number of dicot and monocot plants (Sopory andSharma 1990, Lillo andAppenroth 2001). Light absorbed by phytochrome generally leads to increased levels of NR mRNA, protein and enzyme activity in etiolated plants.…”

“…NR is regulated at both the transcription and posttranslational levels by multiple environmental and endogenous factors (Kaiser and Huber, 2001). Light, for instance, is a critical environmental cue that regulates both NR gene transcription and protein phosphorylation (Lillo and Appenroth, 2001). In the presence of nitrate, NR transcript and protein levels increase dramatically in deetiolating seedlings soon after exposure to illumination.…”
